Saxenda

Weight Loss Injections

A person on the scales

Saxenda is a chronic weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or higher or a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher who have at least one weight-related condition.

It is an adjunct to a reduced calorie diet and greater physical activity for adults as well.

Saxenda works by reducing your appetite and making you feel fuller. You inject Saxenda under your skin using an injection pen. You can see how to inject it on the How to use Saxenda page.

Is it right for me?

Saxenda® addresses one of your body's natural responses to weight loss.

  • Your body naturally produces an appetite hormone known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that helps to regulate your hunger

  • Saxenda® works like GLP-1 by regulating your appetite, which can lead to eating fewer calories and losing weight.

Note that Saxenda shouldn’t be used in the following situations:

  • in children with type 2 diabetes

  • with other weight loss products, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as herbal products

  • with other medications from the same group as Saxenda, GLP-1 agonists

Side Effects

Saxenda has a variety of possible side effects ranging from mild (nausea, bloating, headache, dizziness) to severe (acute pancreatitis, low blood sugar level, increased heart rate). These will all be discussed with you during your consultation.

Please be aware that Saxenda treatment is a prescription medication. You will require a consultation prior to treatment to check you are a suitable candidate.

How do I take Weight Loss Injections?

If you’re prescribed Saxenda, you’ll need to inject it just under the skin. You’ll probably find this is easier than you first think. Saxenda should be used once a day, at around the same time. Best injection sites are your tummy area (abdomen), the front of your thighs or your upper arm. Saxenda needs to be stored in the fridge.
